Methodist church. Dated 1878. Coursed squared stone with
ashlar dressings and slate roof with coped gables and single
gable stack. Romanesque style.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; 3 x 4 windows. Facing gable has
projecting centre with clasping buttresses topped with
pinnacles, and moulded open pediment with pedestal. Venetian
window with impost band, plate tracery and hoodmoulds. Above,
round window with hoodmould, flanked by inscribed tablets.
Below, round-arched double doorway with impost band and
hoodmould, with fielded 4-panel double doors and fanlights. On
either side, a round-arched window. Each return of the central
projection has a round-arched window with hoodmould, and
pierced parapet. Below, in the return angle, a round cornered
hipped projection with pierced balustrades and 3 small
round-arched windows with hoodmoulds. Side bays have each a
single round-arched window with hoodmould.
North and south sides have dentilled cornices and bays divided
by pilaster buttresses. Towards the front, a clasping buttress
topped with a pinnacle. South side has on each floor, 4 double
round-arched margin glazed windows. North side has similar
fenestration, with the ground floor east window replaced by a
round-arched door with 4 fielded panels and fanlight, flanked
to left by a sash with flat head and overlight, and to right
by a round-headed sash. Both have margin glazing.
INTERIOR: largely unaltered. Has matchboard dado on each floor
and coved cross beam plaster ceiling with foliage corbels and
bosses. At the front, two 4-panel doors. At the rear, 2
half-glazed double doors. Round cornered panelled wooden
gallery on round cast-iron columns with Ionic capitals, has
music stands at east end, and 2-tower organ case. Panelled
glazed screens and doors. Entrance hall has cross beams with
foliage corbels and 2 glazed screens with sidelights and
round-arched overlights. At each end, a wooden winder stair
with turned balusters and ramped handrail.
FITTINGS include bow fronted pine pulpit with curved pierced
balustrades, on 3 wooden twist columns, flanked by stairs with
turned balusters. C20 communion table and lectern. Bow fronted
rail to platform. Box pews with doors on ground floor, benches
with shaped ends on gallery.
Memorials include a wall mounted marble headstone, c1916, and
a similar tablet to the Hardcastle family.
